Dust and Cicada Chirping
"Dust and Cicada Chirping" signifies the inability to escape mundane affairs, expressed through murmurs between mountains and rivers. Despite a lack of eloquence, the artist hopes to bring solace and resonance through their artworks. This collection showcases the works of talented artist Shum kwan-yi between three periods (2019-2024): The Urban Wanderer, The Unbearable Lightness, and The Landscape of Haven, reflecting her observations of nature and social expressions through contemporary chinese painting.
The design of the collection begins with a book cover composed of different sizes and materials, representing the complexities of daily affairs . Each part contains artworks from different periods, layered and tightly enveloping the book, symbolizing the inner emotions being concealed layers within layers.
The artist's works are created as an expression of her reflections on the unstable society, using contemporary landscape painting as the medium. They record the mundane details of life during the blurry future of hong kong in the past few years, expressing the inner struggles brought about by the anxiety and oppression of the world and society.
The different-sized covers are tightly bound together by a strand of red line, responding to the artist's contemplation on the present moment, creating at the edge of the red line. On the other side of the red line, left a tag - “Wish you all the best”, the title of one of the artist's paintings, serves as a wish to everyone.
